Provenance
Family of the donor provided the following information, given by sworn affidavit: "The David Rittenhouse clock was the property of my grandmother, Mrs. Lucinda Rittenhouse, wife of James Rittenhouse who resided in Pottstown, PA. At her death in 1886 the clock became the property of my mother Mrs. Annie Rittenhouse Evans. At her death it came into my possession, [James Rittenhouse Evans until 1928]. The Rittenhouse family, of which I am a member, was descended from a brother of James Rittenhouse." Acquired by James S. Benn, Esq. in 1928 through purchase; Herman M. Ellis, Esq., of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the donor, through purchase in May 1958.
