Provenance
From a set of twenty-four owned by President James Monroe. Six are currently in the collection of the Monroe homestead, Ashlawn/Highlands in Charlottesville, Virginia and two are in the collection of the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library in Fredericksburg, Virginia. This example is from a grouping of six owned by a Pennsylvania family whose ancestors acquired the chairs when furnishings from Monroe's last home Oak Hill in Loudon, Virginia were dispersed after his death.
