Signed "A. Conrad". An inscription on the back includes the following: "Painted by A. Conrad in 1948 for the Department of State after portraits by Gilbert Stuart in the National Gallery and by Joseph Wright in the N.Y. Historical Society. The building in the background where Jay had his offices, in Fraunces Tavern at Broad and Pearl Sts, N.Y. City. It is still standing, tho' in restoration it differs from its original appearance as shown here. This version of the building was obtained from contemporary prints. [signed] A.C."
